MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON
As we approach the half way point in our Spring Term, I continue to be amazed at the children’s hard working attitude and the way they have been applying themselves to their learning. I have been particularly looking out for children showing our GROW IT Value of ‘Originality’ and our HEARTS Value of ‘Ambition’ this half term and have been so impressed with what I have seen. We have some wonderfully ambitious children with some very creative ideas – you deserve to be extremely proud of them!

STAFFING UPDATE
We have said another goodbye this week, to one of our Year 4 Learning Support Assistants, Mrs Jones. She will be starting a new job as a Learning Support Assistant at Warblington – we wish her the best of luck with her new role. We are having a bit of a shuffle round of Learning Support Assistants in Year 4 so that we can cover Mrs Jones’ hours, adding Mrs Faithfull, one of our lunchtime supervisors, to the learning support team.

LOVE OUR LIBRARY
It was wonderful to welcome Year 3 parents and pupils into our school library after school earlier this week for our first ‘Love Our Library’ event, where they were able to explore our library together under the guidance of our wonderful librarian, Mrs Dunn and our Year 6 pupil librarians. We will be repeating this for each year group over the next few months so watch this space for upcoming dates!

HOMEWORK SURVEY
Earlier this week we sent out an email regarding a survey to parents to gather views on homework. The pupils are also completing a similar survey in school. Please look in the Forms section of ParentMail for this survey if you have not yet completed it. We will use the results of the survey to help inform decisions about improvements which could be made. The surveys will close on Friday 18th February at 12:00pm.

YEAR 3 NEWS
The first of our Year 3 class assemblies took place on 3rd February. Thank you so much to all the parents, grandparents and family members who came along to support the children. 3A loved showing you what they have been working on and we were incredibly proud of each one of them. 3B have started their rehearsals and 3D's assembly plans are in the pipeline! Broadway here we come!
We thoroughly enjoyed our HEARTS Ambition afternoon. Trying to beat some Guinness World Records turned out to be harder than we thought! You can see some photos here.
Our challenges included:
How many paperclips can you put in a chain in 30 seconds? (The record is 48)
How long can you stand on one leg blindfolded? (The record is 30mins,18 seconds)
How many tennis balls can you hold in one hand? (The record is 27)
How many claps can you do in one minute? (The record is 1,103)
Do try these at home! 🙂
As always, Year 3 are continuing to wow us with how hard they are working and with everything they are achieving... half term will definitely be a well-earned break for them and we look forward to welcoming them back on 1st March.

YEAR 4 NEWS
We have been very impressed by the number of children who are really trying to improve their speed and accuracy in their times tables this term. We know lots of you are practising at home and cannot advocate this enough as it helps the children so much with all aspects of the maths curriculum.
At the end of last month, 4R were very proud to perform their class assembly to parents (which of course we were unable to do last year). Everyone really enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. This term, we have had great fun in science learning about electricity and we will be using equipment to make circuits, which always creates a real buzz (excuse the pun!) Last term, our unit was Light and we looked at keeping safe. Click here to see some lovely posters that children were very proud to share with the year group.
Finally, we have had a very exciting time in Year 4 totally immersing ourselves into our history unit learning about The Ancient Greeks. The children have worked in small groups for our Project Based Learning tasks. This is a very different way of working where the pupils choose something they would like to learn about. They undertake research and then produce some project work to present to everyone. We look forward to welcoming you in after half term to come and view our exhibitions.

YEAR 5 NEWS
Year 5 are now into full swing of their World War II topic and are looking forward to their trips, to the theatre and Milestones Museum, which will consolidate and extend all the learning we have done. We are looking forward to our 1940's day in March, where the children will have the opportunity to experience a day in a 1940's classroom.
There has some been some lovely homework coming in, ranging from map work, models of Anderson Shelters and some delicious cakes made from WWII recipes, which shows how enthusiastic the children are about the topic.
Last week we had a very successful 'Ambition' morning, promoting one of our HEARTS values. We were treated to lots of visitors talking to the children about their jobs. There was a veterinary nurse, a fireman, an actor, a teacher, an artist and a footballer, which hopefully inspired the children for their hopes for the future.

YEAR 6 NEWS
All classes have taken part in a Sensory Trail where they had to follow each other, blindfolded, around a series of obstacles. The staff enjoyed their participation in this activity. Our English topic started with the story of Frankenstein and his monster. The children have greatly enjoyed exploring this unusual being. We have also started our Anglo-Saxon history unit, which we link with DT. This will involve ancient weapon making culminating in an inter class war! Year 6 are also looking forward to our visits to Dell Quay and Havant Plaza where we will be debating an issue in the Council Chambers. Watch this space for the results next month (if we survive the Anglo-Saxon battle!)

BOOK DONATIONS
Thank you to the many children and parents who donate books to our library. If your child has any books in good condition which they are not likely to read again we are always delighted to accept donations of books to our school library.

MEET THE STAFF – Mrs Leanne Austen
What role: Teacher
Where: Year 3
When: I started working at Bosmere in 2007. At the time, I had never heard of Bosmere Junior School and had never been to Havant, but it has become a huge part of my life and I feel very lucky to work here.
What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family. I am not one for sitting still or being indoors for too long and have been known to drag my two children out for adventures whatever the weather. I love being by the sea - we even enjoyed ice creams on the beach on Christmas Eve! I enjoy running and try to make time for a run at least twice a week (often motivated by 3A after going out for our keep fit KM in shoes I can't run in, and promising to do mine in the evening!)
Quirky fact: I once ended up on stage with Diversity (Ashley Banjo is currently a judge on Dancing on Ice) at Portsmouth Guildhall.

ECO NEWS
We were lucky enough to welcome Ben and Ray from IRED to our first Eco-club meeting this term. Elowyn from 6C recounted how ‘IRED brought in these really cool cameras that detect heat which they take to schools and offices and sometimes houses. The cameras produce different colours to show the temperature of the room; i.e. black as freezing and white as boiling hot. IRED use this so they can tell whoever’s building it is, if they need insulation or energy saving devices to keep the building warm. Sometimes they fly drones with the special camera to see how much heat is being lost or used in buildings.’ We all loved using their thermal imaging equipment – what a wonderful experience and we are very grateful to Ray and Ben for coming in to speak with us.
This term, we have formed five work parties to see how we can develop different aspects of our Action Plan. This has been a great way for the children to work on individual projects in mixed year groups and they will feed back their progress each week. Everyone was bubbling with enthusiasm for their different ideas and ways we can take this forward as a school.
More recently, on 2nd February, Eco-club completed the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in the glorious sunshine. We submitted our results, which were very fruitful from the solitude of the Copse and around the sycamore tree. The children also enjoyed getting mucky and making bird feeders to take home. We hope that you have more visitors in your garden as a result!

E-SAFETY TIP
Staying Safe Online
Linking with Safer Internet Day that took place on 8th February this week, children have been taking part in a range of activities to celebrate 'Safer Internet Day'. As part of this, we are running a competition in school where children can create their own E-Safety Poster and earn points for their House Teams.
SWGfL have published this helpful article all about the evolution of online safety in gaming, looking at where we started and how far we have come:
https://swgfl.org.uk/magazine/the-evolution-of-online-safety-in-gaming/?utm_source=January+2022+Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter
ThinkUKnow have also released this online game to support some of the activities children have been doing in school this week:

WELLBEING TIP
Half term is nearly upon us and the dreaded sound of “I’m bored”. Get off those devices and explore the outside.
Fun days out are what you make of them and there are plenty of days out that are free and close by!
Raining? Cold? Windy? No problem… there is no such thing as “bad weather” it is more to do with “wrong clothing”. Wrap up for the warm, extra layers if it is raining, and a spare pair of shoes/boots for the mud.
No child will remember a particular time when they played well on their PS4, but they will remember the day they ran in the mud, were soaked by a wave, made a den, and all of that is with you!
Follow the link to find out more.
