Spring 2 2026

MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON

As we draw to the end of our Spring Term, I believe Spring may have finally arrived!  The snowdrops by the copse appeared and disappeared and now the daffodils are popping up all over the place! What a busy Spring Term this has been. We seem to have squeezed so much into it, from Book Week with a great author visit, to Project Based Learning and exhibitions for parents, to exciting trips and visitors – read on to find out more! As ever, I am exceptionally proud of all the wonderful learning which has been taking place and the huge range of talents shown by all our children here at Bosmere. I do hope everyone can enjoy a well-deserved break over the Easter holidays.

STAFFING NEWS

As you know, we bid a fair fond farewell to Miss Jenner at the end of the first half of this term. 3J have welcomed Mrs White and Miss Terry as their new class teachers.

COMIC RELIEF DAY

Thank you to all the children who came to school in their pyjamas for Comic Relief.  We raised £227.20 for charity.  We received this confirmation from Comic Relief ………………..
Your incredible fundraising total of £227.20 paid in so far, will help local projects across the UK and around the world continue to put food on tables, roofs over heads and bring safety to those facing the scariest times of their lives.

PARENT CONSULTATION MEETINGS

It was lovely to see so many parents at our parent consultation meetings this half term. If you did not get the opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher, please either contact them directly via email or contact the school office and we will be happy to set up a meeting for you.

2KG EASTER EGG

Thank you to everyone who bought tickets for the 2kg Easter Egg donated to the school by Havant Rotary.  The draw took place during assembly this morning and the winner was EATHAN JINS Class 3B. We raised a massive £411 for the PTA.  The PTA are now saving to purchase 30 new laptops for the children.

YEAR 3 NEWS

In Year 3, we have had a wonderful term of learning and exploration. In English, the children have been diving into the works of Paul Geraghty and have enjoyed writing their own thoughtful book reviews inspired by his stories. In geography, we have been investigating our local river and asking the big question: Are all rivers the same? A highlight for the children was the fantastic playground river kindly constructed by Mrs Barnard, which brought our learning to life. After Easter, we are very much looking forward to our upcoming trips to Dell Quay to continue our river studies in the real world. Wishing everyone a very happy and restful Easter break!

YEAR 4 NEWS

What a fantastic Spring Term it has been in Year 4! The children have worked incredibly hard and there has been so much to celebrate across all three classes.

In English, we thoroughly enjoyed our unit on Greek myths. The children produced some brilliant pieces of writing, including imaginative and detailed narrative instructions for defeating the Gorgon Medusa. Their creativity, vocabulary choices and sense of adventure really shone through - we were very proud of the effort everyone put into their work.

In maths, the children have been working hard on their times tables and we have been particularly impressed with their determination. Increasing numbers of pupils are achieving full marks, with children in each class scoring 25/25 in their recent MTC practice test. This is a fantastic achievement and shows the benefit of regular practice.

We also had a wonderful time during Book Week. One of the highlights was building “Tranimalators” with our reading buddies, which involved lots of creativity, problem-solving and teamwork. It was lovely to see the strong collaboration between Year 4 and Year 6.

Another exciting moment was welcoming visiting author Andy Seed. The children really enjoyed hearing about his books and the inspiration behind his writing. It was wonderful to see so many pupils excited about reading and eager to explore his stories further.

Thank you to the parents and carers who joined us for our Story Time Snuggle event. It was a lovely opportunity to share books together and celebrate the joy of reading as a school community.

All three Year 4 classes also enjoyed their visits to Havant Library. The children represented the school beautifully and were wonderfully behaved. It was especially lovely to see them settling into the cosy reading nooks and sharing books with friends.

In maths, we are now moving on to our measurement unit, which includes learning more about telling the time. This is a great opportunity to practise at home – dusting off analogue clocks and asking children to read the time throughout the day can really help build confidence.

We are already looking forward to an exciting Summer Term ahead with lots more learning and activities planned.

For now, we wish all our Year 4 families a restful and happy Easter break. Hopefully the sun will shine and there will be plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures!

YEAR 5 NEWS

We’ve had a busy and exciting few weeks in Year 5, and we’re pleased to share some of the wonderful learning that has been taking place across the curriculum.

Swimming Progress in 5L
5L have continued to make great progress during their weekly swimming lessons. The children have shown growing confidence in the water, developing a range of essential skills—from improving their strokes to practising water safety. Their determination and positive attitude have been fantastic to see.

New English Unit: The Highwayman
In English, we have moved on to our next unit, focusing on the classic narrative poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. The children have already shown great enthusiasm for the story, exploring its rich vocabulary, dramatic imagery, and memorable characters. We look forward to diving deeper into the poem through reading, discussion, and creative writing.

Exploring Volcanoes in Geography
Our volcanoes unit has been a real highlight! The children have engaged brilliantly with the topic, learning about how volcanoes form, what causes eruptions, and the impact they have on the world. A particular favourite activity has been designing and building their own model volcanoes —culminating in some very exciting (and messy!) eruptions. Their creativity and teamwork have been truly impressive.

YEAR 6 NEWS

What a busy Spring term we’ve had! Year 6 have been learning about Anglo-Saxon catapults, and each pupil has had the opportunity to measure, saw, sand, and glue wood together to build their own working model. This hands-on project has been thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and has provided the pupils with a great opportunity to develop practical skills.

Year 6 were also fortunate enough to travel by train to Chichester College to attend their STEM Fair. During the visit, students explored a wide range of exciting STEM activities. Highlights of the trip included riding a motorbike, experiencing a VR headset, and watching a 3D printer create objects such as tiny ships. It was a fantastic day that inspired curiosity and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Year 6 have also been working hard, completing SATs boosters and practice tests in preparation for their SATs next term. This week, the year group are enjoying their Residential Week or the Peter Ashley Activity Centre Day. Pupils attending have been buzzing with excitement and are thoroughly enjoying the activities they have participated in.

LITERACY

Fluency in reading

Fluency skills have a huge impact on your child's learning journey and attainment.  Fluency is the ability to read with expression, recognising words automatically, and is the bridge between word recognition/decoding (breaking words down) and comprehension (understanding). The Fisher Family Foundation's 2024 Fluency Report shows the impact reading fluency has on pupil attainment.

This chart shows the link between reading fluency (how many words a child can read correctly per minute) and success in the Year 6 KS2 reading test.

  • Of pupils reading under 100 words per minute, 42% reached the expected standard.
  • Of those reading 100–130 words per minute, 78% reached the expected standard.
  • Of those reading 130+ words per minute, 95% reached the expected standard.

In simple terms: children who can read more fluently are much more likely to meet age-related expectations in the KS2 reading test. Building reading speed and accuracy supports better understanding and overall test performance.

Importantly, this isn’t just about tests. Strong reading fluency helps children understand all subjects more easily, build confidence, access the wider curriculum, and develop a lifelong love of reading. When reading becomes smooth and automatic, children can focus on meaning, enjoyment and deeper thinking.

What can you do to help?

1. Encourage daily reading (10–15 minutes).
Little and often makes a big difference.

2. Listen to your child read aloud.
This builds accuracy, expression and confidence. Gently correct mistakes and revisit tricky words.

3. Re-read familiar texts.
Reading the same passage more than once helps improve fluency and smoothness.

4. Talk about the book.
Ask simple questions like:

  • What happened?
  • Why did that character do that?
  • What do you think will happen next?

5. Model reading.
Let your child hear you read — show expression and enjoyment.

6. Celebrate progress.
Praise effort as well as accuracy. Confidence is key to improving fluency.

Regular, supportive reading practice at home, as well as at school, can make a significant difference over time.

BOOK WEEK

Bosmere had a great time celebrating Book week. The visiting author Andy Seed kept everyone entertained on the Wednesday with a fun assembly to kick the day off. He then ran workshops with each year group throughout the day.  The children who bought his books were very excited about him signing them.  The children (and staff) all excelled with their costumes this year so a big thank you to parents for making this possible.  We had lots of competitions running and the school council picked the winners for the loo roll decorating competition and the extreme reading competition. The children loved the opportunity for parents to come into school to book share, so thank you to all those who made it into school.  Luckily during story time and snuggles we didn’t have any lower school children falling asleep!!

LIBRARY NEWS

E-SAFETY TIP – What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Streaming Services

Streaming services like BBC iPlayer, Netflix, NowTV, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video have become the go-to entertainment choice for many families, with children often favouring on-demand platforms over traditional television. This parent guide explores the realities behind these services, from rising subscription costs and advert-supported tiers, to the impact of autoplay and endless content libraries on young viewers’ screen time and wellbeing.

It also highlights key safeguarding concerns, including age-inappropriate material, binge watching, algorithm-driven recommendations and phishing scams. With clear, practical advice for setting profiles, PINs and time limits – alongside tips for discussing algorithms and stereotypes – this guide supports parents and educators in promoting safer, healthier streaming habits.

SMARTPHONE FREE CHILDHOOD

We know that many families are concerned about the impact of smartphones and social media on children’s wellbeing — and you are not alone.

What age would you prefer to buy your child a Smartphone?

At Bosmere, we are exploring how we can support families who would ideally like to delay smartphone ownership until after age 15. Would you consider signing the Smartphone-Free Childhood Parent Pledge? The numbers of parents signing the pledge are rising across Hampshire and the UK.

SUSTAINABILITY

During the Spring Term, we have continued to develop our sustainable school! Eco Council have worked hard to develop their actions for this term, including surveying our school site ready to sow wildflower seeds after Easter. Eco Council are very excited to take their next step in making Bosmere a more biodiverse environment! On completion of the Big Bird Watch, Bosmere is now a School for Nature for the 2025-26 academic year. We can't wait to see what else Bosmere can do to make a positive impact on our local area.

PRE-LOVED SCHOOL UNIFORM

Just a reminder that pre-loved uniform can be purchased at the school office any time.

WELLBEING TIP

PTA Easter round-up

Thanks to everyone who supported our most recent events: the February film nights and the Spring discos were a great success! We really appreciate all the on-the-day volunteer support too.

BYE BYE OLD BUS

We have successfully sold the old minibus and those funds have gone back into the PTA pot.

CASHLESS DONATIONS

The ability to make donations on ParentMail has been set up. We know that on donation days it can sometimes be a scramble to find cash on the morning! Using ParentMail means donations are now just one click away, making things much easier for everyone.

YOUR PTA STILL NEEDS YOU!

We still need a new treasurer: please do let us know if you could volunteer in this capacity. No financial background or qualifications for this role are required, and you will not be expected to attend all the PTA meetings in person as the meetings are held over TEAMS.  If you would like further information please contact Alison Reilly by email:- a.reilly@bosmere.hants.sch.uk

SATs

Year 6 children will be sitting their SATs tests next half term starting on 11th May. They have worked so hard this year and are more than ready to show everyone what they can do. They deserve to be very proud of all they have achieved. We do not want any children getting anxious about these tests. As parents, you can help them by making sure they get plenty of sleep and arrive on time to school each day, having had a good breakfast.

All music lessons during SATs week will be cancelled.

SUPERSTARS

We are looking forward to holding our annual ‘Superstars’ PTA fundraising event on Wednesday 20th May during the afternoon and continuing after school. Parents are invited to join us in the playground to watch their children taking part in some crazy events! There will be refreshments available and lots of fun to be had. More details will be coming out about this next half term, including a plea for parent support on our refreshment stalls. Look out for further ParentMail information regarding this event.

FARM VISITS AND TICK AWARENESS

HCC have asked us to issue the following advice to families:-

Now is the time of year when farms open their gates to share with the public the joy of spring and the arrival of new life. Over the Easter Holidays families may take the opportunity to spend time visiting farms and other animal attractions. While the experience is fun and educational there is also a risk that infections commonly carried by animals are passed on to people.

Another aspect to consider for outdoor activities is ticks, which are most active between spring and autumn and which can sometimes transmit diseases such as Lyme disease.

More details can be found via these links.
