MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON
Welcome everyone to the third of our Bosmere Newsletters this school year. I can hardly believe we are approaching the half way mark already! We have been encouraging all the children to show our GROW IT Value of ‘Originality’ and our HEARTS Value of ‘Ambition’ this half term, and I have certainly been seeing some great examples of this, both in the work they are producing in the classroom and in the superb homework tasks which are constantly being brought into school. Thank you to all parents who have been supporting children with these tasks at home.
|
|
STAFFING NEWS
Unfortunately, we will be saying goodbye to Miss Jenner at the end of this half term. Miss Jenner was employed on a temporary contract and has now secured a permanent position at another school teaching Early Years. Miss Jenner will be missed by all the children and staff in Yr3, but we wish her well for the future. 3J will be taught by Mrs White and Miss Terry from after half term.

PARENT CONSULTATION MEETINGS
We are really looking forward to meeting with parents for our parent consultation meetings next half term – look out for an email about this at the end of February. These meetings are extremely important for ensuring we can work together in partnership to ensure your child is happy and successful in school, so please make sure you book an appointment. Your child will be bringing home their Milestone 2 assessment report on Wednesday 12th March, which will form the basis of the discussion at the meeting.

YEAR 3 NEWS
It’s been a wonderfully busy and exciting time in Year 3, with lots of hands-on learning and smiling faces throughout the classroom!
English – Instruction Writing
This term, the children have been learning how to write clear and detailed instructions. They have practised bossing verbs around using imperative verbs and have created fantastic step-by-step guides for how to make the perfect sandwich. They then let their imaginations run wild with instructions for how to be a pirate — complete with treasure maps, sea shanties, and plenty of “Arrr!”s. Their creativity has been brilliant!
Maths – Column Addition & Subtraction
In maths, Year 3 have been working hard on column addition and subtraction, including exchanging. They have shown great concentration as they’ve tackled trickier calculations, and their confidence is really growing. It’s been lovely to see so many children challenging themselves and taking pride in accurate working-out.
Science – Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Our young scientists have been exploring the differences between solids, liquids, and gases. Through hands-on investigations and lively discussions, they have deepened their understanding of how materials behave and change. Their curiosity has led to some brilliant questions — we definitely have future scientists amongst us!
History – Ancient Egyptian Day
We had a fantastic Egyptian Day! The children took a virtual tour around Ancient Egypt, exploring pyramids, pharaohs, and ancient artefacts. They learned all about mummification… and even had a go at mummifying their own teddies! There was lots of laughter (and lots of bandages!) as they practised wrapping and preparing their cuddly toys like true Ancient Egyptians. It was a day full of fun, facts, and unforgettable memories.
What a brilliant few weeks! Year 3 should be very proud of their hard work, enthusiasm, and teamwork. We can’t wait to see what the next part of the term brings.

YEAR 4 NEWS
We have thoroughly enjoyed our new unit on Greek Myths, immersing ourselves in stories of gods, heroes and mythical creatures. In geography, we loved exploring the differences between Athens and Havant, and successfully applied our fieldwork skills to create detailed sketch maps of our local area.
In maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of the four operations. Ask your child to wow you by showing you the division method we have been practising! A reminder to please access Times Tables Rock Stars – weekly competitions have now begun.
As part of the National Year of Reading, we have loved reading our first month of books and are eagerly looking forward to our next delivery. There has been a big focus on developing fluency in reading, so please encourage your child to read with expression at home.
Well done to 4P and 4AW for their brilliant class assemblies – thank you to all the families who came to watch and support them.
4AW are sad to be saying goodbye to Mrs White at the end of this half term. She will always remain a valued member of the 4AW family and, fortunately, she will only be a couple of doors away. Year 3 are very lucky to have her! We are also looking forward to welcoming Miss Faithful to teach in 4AW more regularly – she is already a familiar and experienced member of the Year 4 team.
Wishing our Year 4 pupils and families a lovely half term.

YEAR 5 NEWS
5L have now begun their swimming lessons and are off to a brilliant start. The children are showing great resilience as they learn new skills in the pool, and it’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow so far. We’re very proud of the positive attitude they are bringing to each session.
English – Holes
In English, we are now a few weeks into our unit on the book Holes by Louis Sachar. The children are thoroughly enjoying the story and are showing excellent engagement during our reading and discussion sessions. They’ve been eager to explore the characters, make predictions, and delve into the mysterious setting of Camp Green Lake.
Geography – Volcanoes
We have also started our new geography unit on volcanoes, and the children’s enthusiasm has been fantastic! They have shown great curiosity as we explore how volcanoes form, why they erupt, and where they are found around the world. We look forward to continuing this exciting topic with lots of hands-on learning opportunities.

YEAR 6 NEWS
During the first half of the Spring term, Year 6 have had a wonderful time visiting Chichester Harbour. While there, the children worked with the Chichester Harbour Conservancy, learning about the different path users around the harbour and the impact they can have on the environment. Using this knowledge, each class travelled to Havant Civic Offices to take part in a debate based on the issues they had explored. All members of Year 6 participated brilliantly and gained a great deal from this hands-on learning experience.
In English, our unit has focused on Frankenstein and Strange Star. The children have produced lots of creative and expressive writing, confidently using a wide range of grammar and punctuation skills. In History, Year 6 have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and we have seen some fantastic homework linked to this topic.
Preparations are now underway for our Year 6 residential trip to the Isle of Wight, which will take place at the end of the Spring Term. Both children and staff are becoming very excited as the trip approaches.

LITERACY
Bring Books to Life with AI Interviews! 📚✨
What if your child could interview their favourite book character? With age-appropriate AI tools, children can now chat with characters from stories they love - asking questions, exploring feelings, and discovering hidden details from the plot in a fun, imaginative way.
From talking to the Big Bad Wolf about his choices, to asking Hermione how she studies for exams, these playful interviews help children:
· deepen comprehension
· practise thoughtful questioning
· build confidence and creativity
· see reading as an exciting adventure
This is a lovely activity to enjoy together as a family. Sit alongside your child, choose a character, and help shape curious, respectful questions.
Try these fun example prompts:
· “You are [character name] from [book title]. Please answer my questions using language suitable for a 7-year-old.”
· “I am a child reader. Can you pretend to be [character name] and tell me how you felt when [key event] happened?”
Important reminder:
Please remember to set an age limit for answers and use child-friendly or parental controls on any AI tool. This ensures responses are safe and appropriate.
Books already open doors to amazing worlds - AI can help children step right inside them. Happy reading and happy interviewing!

LIBRARY NEWS
As part of The National Year of Reading 2026 campaign, Bosmere launched our ‘Book Boxes’ idea, where each class has a box of school library books to use as their SQUIRT books in class. Each box is on a different theme and stays with the class for a month, and is then moved on to the next class. Every class will see every theme by the end of 2026. The themes include Festivals around the World, STEM Adventures, Fantastic Fantasy, Historical Time Travel, Jokes, Graphic Novels, Biography … to name just a few. The Pupil Librarians were actively and enthusiastically involved in selecting the books and distributing the boxes. Each month, each class sets up a display to promote their new box of books.

Our latest competitions have been focussing on poetry, with ‘I Have a Dream’, and on inventing conversations with animals through ‘Interview with …’ . The latter is in preparation for our Book Week next month when we are excited to be meeting Andy Seed, our visiting author.

E-Safety tip
Roblox remains a hugely popular platform with children, but parents should be aware of several online safety concerns. Because Roblox hosts millions of user-created games, moderation can be inconsistent, meaning younger players may still encounter inappropriate or mature content despite filters being in place.
The platform’s chat features also carry risks. Investigations have shown that harmful or unsuitable messages can sometimes bypass automated moderation, raising concerns about contact from strangers, including potential grooming attempts.
The Guardian recently highlighted serious safety issues after a journalist’s child-age avatar was subjected to cyberbullying and explicit behaviour—even with parental controls turned on—showing how important active supervision remains. https://www.theguardian.com/games/2025/nov/05/roblox-game-robux-children-child-kids-safety-parental-controls
Parents can help keep children safer by using Roblox’s parental controls, limiting or disabling chat, monitoring in-game spending, and keeping open conversations about what children see and experience online.
Please find a parent’s guide on the website at the link below: https://www.bosmere.hants.sch.uk/news/?pid=12&nid=2&storyid=321
SMARTPHONE FREE CHILDHOOD
We know that many families are concerned about the impact of smartphones and social media on children’s wellbeing — and you are not alone.
What age would you prefer to buy your child a Smartphone?
At Bosmere, we are exploring how we can support families who would ideally like to delay smartphone ownership until after age 15. Would you consider signing the Smartphone-Free Childhood Parent Pledge? The numbers of parents signing the pledge are rising across Hampshire and the UK. https://www.smartphonefreechildhood.org/parent-pact
We want to empower parents to make confident, informed choices — and to know that they are not alone in choosing a different path.
We'd love to see more Bosmere parents sign the pledge; your name will not be visible to anyone else. Obviously, it is not legally binding, and you might decide later that your child is ready ... but we feel that the most valuable part of signing the pact is giving parents the confidence to know that they don't have to provide a smartphone to their child because everyone else wants to do the same.

WELLBEING TIP
Consequences and decision making is difficult enough, especially when you child is in a heightened state! Mrs Lever is co-facilitating a small group known as the Nurturing programme and these top tips are part of the sessions. If you would like further information please contact Mrs Lever.

A reminder that all parents are welcome to drop in on our Friday coffee morning 8.30am - 9.30am to 'connect with school staff and one another'. We enjoy a cup of coffee together and an informal chat on everything from parenting to our favourite breakfasts. We hope to see you there!

PTA NEWS
MINI BUS NEWS
Finally, the wait is over… this half term we are pleased to announce the new Bosmere mini bus has been purchased! It arrived at school this week. The school has been able to make this purchase with money donated to the PTA by the school community over a long period. Thank you to everyone who has supported PTA events to raise these funds. The minibus will be put to such good use, for school trips and sports fixtures like the up-coming dodgeball tournament that some of the children are attending. Thanks too to Mr Adam and one of our governors Nick Durkee who went up to Swindon to test drive and check it over. The purchase has been as cost effective as possible: the company who sold it to us has included adding the school’s logo on the minibus’s livery at no extra cost. Additionally, the minibus has only had one previous owner, it’s an ex-lease minibus from another school who did not use it much and so it has very low mileage, a full-service history, three years' warranty, and all new tyres.

OK COMPUTER
Now the PTA have set its sights on the next fundraising challenge. We have discussed this with Mrs Robinson at our most recent meeting and agreed that the next item we should fund with PTA fundraising money is a suite of 30 new laptops for the school. These will be used by all the children for classes and a variety of activities. Whilst each laptop the school buys is used to the maximum extent possible, like everything else, computers do have a life-expectancy, and the current suite of laptops is gradually diminishing and coming to end-of-life.
As always, good value for money will be the focus of buying these items, balanced with ethical purchasing considerations.
YOUR PTA NEEDS YOU!
Our Treasurer, Jacqui Green has been supporting the PTA for a few years but will step down at the end of the academic year as her youngest child leaves the school. Thank you, Jacqui, for your efforts during your time on the PTA. We will be sad to see you go. This means we are on the hunt for a new treasurer - no previous experience required! This role involves giving the monthly update on incomings and expenditure at meetings, collaborating with Mrs Reilly to count cash after events and take it to the post office, reading bank correspondence and receiving a PTA magazine.
If this sounds like something you could offer your time to and you’d like to volunteer on the PTA in this capacity, including starting a hand-over with Jacqui from Easter onwards, then please get in touch with Mrs Reilly to let us know.
CHRISTMAS MONEY
We raised over £2,500 this Christmas: a staggering amount, thank you for all your donations! A special mention of thanks to all the local businesses who donated prizes for our raffle. Your support for our school is greatly appreciated.
NO CASH? NO PROBLEM!
We are going to be adding to ParentMail a donation option for anyone who would like to donate money but hasn’t had a chance to get hold of any cash on the appropriate day. We know that we live in an increasingly cashless society and we are happy to modernise if it helps make the donations process more convenient for people who would like to make them. We have seen this work successfully at Fairfield Infants and can easily do the same at Bosmere.
JOIN OUR TEAM
We understand it’s not always possible to attend a meeting in person at school at tea-time/bedtime. If you can’t make it along in person but would still like to join a PTA meeting, we always have a Teams link open, so anyone who needs to can join by video conference. Just click on the Teams meeting link sent out to everyone as a ParentMail message.
UPCOMING EVENTS
This week we have enjoyed hosting our Film Nights. We look forward to seeing the children soon at our Spring Disco in March. Look out on Parentmail for more information near the time.
