Spring 1 2025

MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON

Welcome everyone to the third of our Bosmere Newsletters this school year. I can hardly believe we are approaching the half way mark already! We have been encouraging all the children to show our GROW IT Value of ‘Originality’ and our HEARTS Value of ‘Ambition’ this half term, and I have certainly been seeing some great examples of this, both in the work they are producing in the classroom and in the superb homework tasks which are constantly being brought into school. Thank you to all parents who have been supporting children with these tasks at home.

STAFFING NEWS

This term we have been joined by two new members of staff - Mrs Cameron, LSA in Year 4 and Mrs Groves our new Lunchtime Supervisory Assistant, both of whom have been welcomed by staff and children and already feel like they are part of the team.

PRE-LOVED UNIFORM

Thank you to Mrs May and Mrs Markova who kindly gave up their time to help set up the Pre-Loved uniform and to Mrs Nantaba and Mrs Otoo who helped clear up at the end of the event, and of course, to everyone who sent in their unwanted uniform. This event raised £54 for our PTA. We will be repeating the event in the Summer Term.

CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISING

Thank you so much to parents for the very generous donations and contributions to support our fundraising at Christmas. Here are the amounts raised:

Raffle - £1,253.50

Collections at performances - £60

Secrets Rooms - £1,056.51

Performance Photographs - £203

Christmas Card Commission - £271.02

As mentioned in our previous Newsletter, thank you to all the local businesses who supported us with the raffle.  We couldn’t do it without you!!

ASDA’S CASHPOINT FOR SCHOOLS

We would like to thank all our parents who registered for Asda’s cashpoint for schools.  You raised £325.63 for the PTA.

PARENT CONSULTATION MEETINGS

We are really looking forward to meeting with parents for our parent consultation meetings next half term – look out for an email about this at the end of February. These meetings are extremely important for ensuring we can work together in partnership to ensure your child is happy and successful in school, so please make sure you book an appointment. Your child will be bringing home their Milestone 2 assessment report on Wednesday 12th March, which will form the basis of the discussion at the meeting.

YEAR 3 NEWS

The children have had lots of fun in English this half term, writing instructions for aliens, on how to get dressed, using their imperative (bossy) verbs. We have been looking for patterns in maths to help us with our adding and subtracting, using up to three-digit numbers. The children have also spent a whole day dressed as Egyptians. During the morning, they used VR headsets, performed surgery on a mummy and examined Egyptian artefacts. The afternoon was spent having an Egyptian feast, drawing cartouches and mummifying their teddies. The teachers in the year group have decided that any First Aid should be left to the adults!

YEAR 4 NEWS

This term, Year 4 are diving into some fascinating topics! In history, the children are stepping back in time to explore the Ancient Greeks. Discovering the myths of gods and goddesses, their curiosity has sparked some brilliant discussions and creative projects.

In science, our budding electricians have been exploring circuits. They’ve been learning how to light up bulbs, power buzzers, and investigate what happens when circuits are open or closed. It’s been shocking fun—safely, of course!

Meanwhile, in English, the children have been writing poems inspired by Kennings and Paul Cookson. They’ve been using creative language, describing a dragon and adding humour, rhythm, and energy to their poetry. We’ve been amazed at their imaginative ideas and clever wordplay.

It’s been a busy term so far, full of learning and creativity. Well done, Year 4!

YEAR 5 NEWS

We have settled back into Year 5 with renewed focus, especially in our maths lessons. The students have been working hard to master new written methods and strategies for solving problems. It's been great to see the progress they’ve made and the confidence they're gaining in their mathematical abilities.

Swimming Lessons: 5B have completed their swimming lessons and have made fantastic progress in developing their swimming skills. Meanwhile, 5L have just begun their lessons, and we are all looking forward to seeing their progress over the coming weeks.

Highwayman Unit: We are thoroughly enjoying our current unit on The Highwayman. The students are engaged and excited as we explore this narrative poem, and we're learning so much about its themes, characters, and language. The class discussions have been insightful, and it's wonderful to see everyone so enthusiastic.

Sewing Days: In March, each class in Year 5 will be completing a 'Sewing Day' where they will make their final product in our 'Sensory Toy' unit. If anyone feels they could offer support with sewing, we would be very grateful for any extra pairs of hands. The dates are as follows:

Monday 10th March - 5B

Wednesday 12th March - 5P

Wednesday 19th March - 5L

Please email l.browne@bosmere.hants.sch.uk if you are able to support at all throughout the day. Mrs Browne will be in touch to confirm details with you.

YEAR 6 NEWS

We welcomed back Year 6 after a lovely Christmas break. Of course, it was straight back into lessons. During January all three classes visited Dell Quay and Havant Plaza. This trip involved the children debating, in small groups acting as: dog walkers, bird lovers, hospitality, scientists, farmers and other path users, asking the question 'Should dogs be banned from the costal path?' The children then had a walk, in role, to discuss their group's point of view on whether dogs should be banned. They then wrote all their ideas down to present in a debate at the Plaza. On arrival at the Plaza, the appointed Chairman led the debate. All the adults were very impressed by the way the children listened to each other and arguments presented. We would like to thank Chichester Harbour Conservancy for providing such an experience for our children.

E-SAFETY TIP – TikTok

Follow the link for a parents guide to TikTok:

https://www.bosmere.hants.sch.uk/news/?pid=12&nid=2&storyid=318

Among children – and especially teenagers – TikTok boasts approximately 220 million users, providing a near-endless reel of short clips intended to entertain, educate and more. However, along with its enormous userbase comes a significant number of possible risks: Ofcom have dubbed it the most likely app on which teen users would potentially suffer harm. With the platform reaching astronomical levels of success among the younger generation, it's vitally important for parents and educators to understand the risks it poses. This guide lets you know about the most prominent potential dangers associated with TikTok and offers expert advice on how to safeguard youngsters who are navigating the site.

Introducing the "Back to Basics" Framework

We're excited to share Hampshire County Council's "Back to Basics" framework with you! This fantastic initiative is all about supporting our children's well-being and development by focusing on the essentials of family life. It offers practical tips and resources to help strengthen family bonds, improve parenting skills, and build a supportive community around our kids.

https://www.hants.gov.uk/socialcareandhealth/childrenandfamilies/back-to-basics

By embracing the "Back to Basics" framework, our school aims to create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive. We encourage all parents and caregivers to check out the resources and join in the programs and workshops available. Let's work together to give our children the best start in life!  This term our school is particularly focusing on the 'Connect' strand of the framework. This means we're putting extra effort into helping children build strong, positive relationships with their peers, teachers, and families. We believe that by fostering these connections, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment where every child feels valued and understood.

Here are a few tips for 'connecting' with your child. They may seem obvious but our busy, screen-filled, modern life means it's easy for us to forget some of the fundamentals from time to time.

  • Spend Quality Time Together: Dedicate time each day to do something fun with your child, whether it's playing a game, reading a book, or just chatting about their day. This helps build a strong bond and shows them that you value their company.

  • Listen Actively: When your child talks to you, give them your full attention. Put away distractions like phones or TV, and really listen to what they have to say. This makes them feel heard and understood

  • Share Meals: Eating together as a family is a great way to connect. Use meal time to talk about everyone's day, share stories, and enjoy each other's company. It creates a routine and a sense of togetherness.

  • Get Involved in Their Interests: Show interest in what your child loves to do. Whether it's a hobby, a sport, or a favourite TV show. Participating in their interests can help you connect on a deeper level.

  • Be Present: Make an effort to be fully present when you're with your child. This means putting aside work and other distractions to focus on them. Even small moments of undivided attention can make a big difference.

COFFEE MORNINGS

A reminder that all parents are welcome to drop in on our Friday coffee morning 8.30am - 9.30am to connect with school staff and one another. We enjoy a cup of coffee together and an informal chat on everything from parenting to our favourite breakfasts. We hope to see you there!
