MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON
It doesn’t seem possible that we are into our second half term already! I do hope you all enjoyed some family time over the half term holiday. The children all deserve to be so proud of the positivity and determination they have shown as they have got straight back into their learning on their return to school. I have been visiting classes awarding stickers for effort with presentation and, as always, have been so impressed with what I have seen.

STAFFING UPDATE
We were extremely sad to lose Mr Brown our Site Manager last month. He took up a Site Manager position closer to where he lives. We are currently interviewing for this position, so hope to have a new Site Manager before too long. In the meantime, our cleaning team of Miss Emery, Miss Faithfull and Miss Gregory have all stepped up to cover the role and are doing a fantastic job, particularly
Miss Emery and the never ending task of clearing the leaves!

PARENT SURVEY
Those parents who were with us last academic year will remember that the Governors sent out a Parent Survey in the Summer Term. We have already shared the results of that survey with parents – full details are on our school website under the parent tab if you missed this. Suffice to say, the overwhelming majority of parents are very happy with Bosmere and would recommend the school to others. Any comments received as part of the survey which included further suggestions for improvement have now been discussed by the Governors and the Senior Leadership Team. The following actions have been identified:
- Share with parents the curriculum overviews each term through email to provide further information about what their children will be learning
- Further develop opportunities for parents to share in their child's learning in school through, for example, workshop events and the sharing of class learning
- Ensure full engagement of parents in parent consultation meetings with teachers to discuss their child's learning
Thank you once again to all parents for your ongoing support in making Bosmere the wonderful school it is.

HARVEST
We are looking forward to welcoming parents to join us for our Harvest Assemblies this year on Thursday 21st October (Year 3 and Year 4 at 9am / Year 5 and Year 6 at 10am). We have decided to collect for the Beacon Food Bank for our Harvest Collection again this year – each year group is hoping to fill a shopping trolley full of food that we can deliver to them. Any perishable/long life items would be appreciated but they are particularly short of:
Pot noodles
3-minute noodles
Tinned puddings
Tinned fruit
Sugar
Jams
Please send donations in with the children on Wednesday 20th October, so that we can create a display ready for the assemblies!

YEAR 3 NEWS
Year 3 have been enjoying lots of opportunities to explore books over the last couple of weeks. We have been keen to develop a love of reading among our Year 3 children and it has been wonderful to see them all so enthusiastic and inspired. Each class has had an opportunity to visit Bosmere’s library, with an introduction from Mrs Library Dunn. Each child was able to select a book to bring back and add to our year 3 library; these are now being enjoyed across the year group during our regular, timetabled quiet reading slots.
A big thank you to our parent volunteers who have started coming in and listening to the children read – your support is invaluable and we know the children are enjoying sharing their books with you.
Last Thursday, we enjoyed a year group visit to Havant Library. The visit was a huge success, with the children finding out what the library has to offer, enjoying a story and having the opportunity to explore the shelves and share a book with a friend.
The children did us proud, walking from school to the library sensibly and considerately – they did a great job representing Bosmere.
Many of the children were keen to borrow books; it costs nothing, but they do need you to sign them up. We would love to encourage as many of our Year 3 children as possible to join the library – please do not underestimate the power of books. For many of the children, the library truly was a magical place.

YEAR 4 NEWS
The Year 4 team have been so impressed by the quality and quantity of homework tasks that have been submitted already this term. Thank you so much to you all. We know there have been a lot of family efforts and kitchen tables over run with art and craft projects!
Year 4 love a school trip and have been out and about this term already. On Thursday 16th September, the year group walked up to Havant Library to explore this wonderful resource on our doorstep and share some good reads. If you have not yet found the library in the Meridian Centre, I strongly advise you pay them a visit. It is free to join and they have an extensive children’s reading area as well as running weekend and holiday activities to keep everyone entertained.

The following week, we had an inspirational trip to Fort Nelson for a fun filled day of workshops beginning with a Celtic Feast in a ‘roundhouse’ and finishing with a Roman invasion, where we all donned a Roman shield to march into the parade ground and make various formations including the much remembered tortoise. We did not have time to look around the whole museum, but this is a wonderful day out for all the family (and free admittance). A lot of the ammunition tunnels and exhibitions are inside, so it is a great visit on a rainy day.
Please can we remind you all that now the weather has turned autumnally unpredictable, every child must have a coat in school every day as they will be going out on the playground unless it is pouring with rain.

YEAR 5 NEWS
What a fantastic first half term we have had in Year 5! All Year 5 children have had a swimming assessment at Horizon Leisure Centre. The children have really embraced this opportunity and have now been split into ability groups. Each group will receive lessons over a term. The first group has already started.
This term Year 5 has been learning all about Space. We were lucky enough to visit the Chichester Planetarium. While there, we experienced what it is like to be under a night sky with no light pollution. We even spotted planets and constellations. It was amazing! Year 5 also had great fun measuring the distance between planets using toilet rolls! (See photo below)
The Year 5 team has been very impressed with all the wonderful homework coming in. We have some truly amazing Mayan Temples! Keep up the great work!

YEAR 6 NEWS
Year 6 has already had a busy start to the year. On Friday 1st October we were invited to Warblington School for a 'Taster' afternoon. As the children were given doughnuts and cookies with their lunch, it turned into a 'tasty' afternoon.
The children had an opportunity to try different subjects. These included Spanish, P.E, I.C.T, geography, science and drama. 6C loved 'becoming' sweets during Drama.
Also on Friday, Year 6 attended their teambuilding evening back at school. There were different activities to complete including 'Guess the teachers baby photo', 'Human Knot' and a campfire. This resulted in the strangest campfire story ever! After this Year 6 ate a fish and chip supper while watching a film.
Needless to say, we had some very tired children (and staff) leaving school on Friday night.

ECO-COMMITTEE
We were very excited to use Havant’s involvement in Big Green Week to launch Eco-schools through 4F’s class assembly. Following the assembly, we received mentions in a couple of articles of The News and every child in the school wrote a postcard to Alan Mak persuading him to take action about the current climate chaos we are in. Watch this space!
Thank you so much to the parents who have offered advice and offers of support for our quest to become an Eco-school. It makes such a big difference to have all the various contacts, experience and offers of time and help and we are very grateful for this.
Mrs Fisk was inundated with applications to be on the new Eco committee, which will be the driving force behind us achieving Eco-Schools status. The committee have now met and will undertake a review of our school grounds to see how much we are already doing and, what more can be done to make our school an even better place to be working in. We will then be in touch with all the parents and wider school community to see how we can all work together on this exciting new venture.

(Eco News ctd) INSTALLING OUR NEW SOLAR PANELS
Just before the summer holidays, Hampshire made an enquiry to Bosmere about using the school as a trial for solar panels. Mrs Reilly and Mrs Robinson jumped at the chance to be involved in such a scheme. The installation took place over the summer holidays. The panels can produce up to 10KW per hour (weather permitting), which is enough to run our entire school lighting for one day. This means that not only will we be helping our world by reducing the need to generate electricity, we will be saving the school a considerable amount of money over a longer period of time, which can be better spent elsewhere in the school. The Eco-committee will be monitoring this and producing statistics to see how much money we can save the school. This is a very exciting venture for us to be involved with and one which other schools are now investigating.

Mrs Simpson has taken on board the responsibility of organising a group of lunchtime litter pickers who have been doing a sterling job of collecting any stray rubbish before it gets blown around the school grounds and potentially harming our wildlife. You are all amazing!

Mrs Fisk has been working with Grainne Raison at Warblington School, who is also looking ahead to Eco-Schools status and we hope to be collaborating our efforts and working together closely on this venture.
So all in all, we have hit the ground running with this scheme and we are all very excited about where it will lead us!

When: I started teaching at Bosmere in September after moving back to the area from London.
What is it like working at Bosmere: Bosmere is a brilliant place to work! All the staff have been so friendly and welcoming and the children love learning.
What do you like to do in your spare time: I have been enjoying exploring the local area and spending time with my friends and family.
Quirky fact: I’m a big radio nerd! Before training to be a teacher I studied radio production and worked at Virgin, Radio X and BBC R4.

E-SAFETY TIP
New Year, new beginnings, new apps and new language!
The way our children interact with the internet has never been so fast-moving and it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with the changes and trends.

Here you can search for any apps, games or social media sites and it will give you a detailed description of what it's about, who it's made by and most importantly who it's made for so you can see if it's appropriate. Therre is also a lot of other additional information throughout the site so definitely one worth adding to the bookmark bar!
Along with this, published in the most recent Digital Parenting Guide is 5 terms every should know - some of which I had heardof but didn't fully understand the meaning!
Deepfakes: AI-generated fake videos or images that allow people's faces or bodies to be swapped or digitally altered - commonly seen in celebrity videos, fake news and on face-swapping apps.
Cancel Culture: On social media, this often refers to the withdrawal of support for public figures - e.g. Instagrammers - or companies we disagree with.
Misinformation: False information that hasn't necessarily been created to intentionally mislead people - e.g. sharing COVID-19 'miracle cure' without knowing if it's genuinely effective or not.
Disinformation: False information that is intended to deliberately mislead people - e.g. writing a blog post that intentionally contains inaccurate news.
Digital Activism: Using digital platforms - like social media - to encourage social or political change, as seen during the US election and Black Lives Matter movement.

WELLBEING TIP
No parent wants to see their child upset, but sometimes it is hard to know how to react when your child is nervous or afraid
Don’t Be Too Involved
By telling your child exactly what to do or even what to say in stressful and challenging situations, means they will not be able to solve problems on their own or learn ways to cope by themselves. Try to get them to problem solve first before offering a helpful hand.
Don’t Avoid Activities
When children constantly avoid situations that make them afraid or uncomfortable, their fears never go away.
Have a chat
Give them some one-on-one time and listen without judging or discounting their anxiety. The best time to talk is when they are feeling calm, as they will be able to listen to you more easily.
Don’t Overly Reassure
Telling your child that “everything will be okay,” might actually confirm to your child that there is something to fear or give false reassurance.
Be Patient
Not knowing how to help can be hard and frustrating, but don’t let those emotions show. Your child can sense how you are feeling. Revealing your emotions could make your child feel like they have upset you or increase their nervousness. React calmly to help your child feel calmer.
Do Empathise
Even if what they are afraid of seems silly to you, it is important to show your child that you understand. Although they may not truly have anything to be fearful of, the emotions they are feeling are very real.
Don’t Wait Until They Are 100% Anxiety Free to Reward Their Behaviour
Encourage and praise small accomplishments. Being brave while facing things they are afraid of or are feeling nervous about is something to celebrate!
