SPORTS DAY

We had a brilliant day on Sports Day, just finishing before the rain truly came down!  Thank you to all the parents who came to support and well done to all the children for showing great sportsmanship and support for each other. A special well done to Exeter for an ‘across the board’ win!

END OF YEAR CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY

A reminder that we are looking forward to welcoming parents into school for our Final Celebration Assemblies on Wednesday 22nd July. L/S will be held at 9:15 am and U/S at 10:15 am. As with last year, we have decided to hold the assemblies outside, under the shade of our lovely tree at the back of the school. If it is raining on the day, the assemblies will still go ahead but will be held in the hall. If the weather is fine and the assemblies can be held outside, parents wishing to attend either of the assemblies will need to enter the school via the small green gate on South Street. This will be opened at 9:00 am for the Lower School assembly and at 10:00 am for the Upper School assembly. It is anticipated that each assembly will last around 40 minutes. (If the assemblies must be moved indoors, entry will be via the main door.) We are looking forward to seeing you there.

YEAR 3 NEWS

Year 3 have had a fantastic few weeks of learning and discovery. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Butser Ancient Farm, where the children stepped back in time to learn all about life in the Stone Age, from exploring roundhouses to safely creating fire.  The visit brought our history learning to life and gave the children a real insight into how people lived thousands of years ago.

In art, the children have been learning about Stone Age cave paintings and have created their own impressive cave artworks to tell stories about life in the Stone Age. Their creativity and attention to detail have been wonderful to see.

Despite the hot weather, the children have continued to work incredibly hard and should be very proud of all they have achieved this year. Thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year—we wish all our Year 3 families a happy, relaxing, and well-deserved summer break!

YEAR 4 NEWS

As we come to the end of a wonderful year in Year 4, we would like to take this opportunity to say how incredibly proud we are of all the children. They have worked exceptionally hard throughout the year and have finished the final half term with enthusiasm, determination and a real love of learning.

One of the highlights of this half term was our Project Based Learning task, where the children planned a trip around the UK. We were so impressed by their teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills. They worked collaboratively, shared ideas thoughtfully, and produced some fantastic travel plans.

In English, the children approached our unit on Out of the Ashes with great maturity and sensitivity. They demonstrated a wonderful understanding of the themes explored in the text and produced some truly beautiful pieces of empathetic writing. We were incredibly proud of the thoughtfulness and care they showed in their work.

We would also like to recognise the children's commitment and resilience during their Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). They approached the challenge with positive attitudes and worked incredibly hard in preparation, showing great perseverance and confidence.

Of course, one of the biggest highlights of the year was our Stubbington residential. What a fantastic experience it was! The children embraced every activity, challenged themselves, supported one another, and created memories that will last a lifetime. There was plenty of fun, laughter and adventure along the way. This was our first Year 4 residential, but it certainly won't be our last!

Finally, we would like to thank you for your support throughout the year. It has been an absolute pleasure teaching your children. Watching them grow in confidence, independence and maturity has been incredibly rewarding, and we couldn't be prouder of everything they have achieved.

We hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing summer holiday. The children have worked so hard and truly earned it!

YEAR 5 NEWS

Year 5 have had a busy and exciting Summer Term!

5BD have completed their swimming lessons and made excellent progress towards achieving their 25m award. 5S and 5L have enjoyed refining their rounders skills in some friendly matches between the different house teams.

The children have also been working incredibly hard on their Bombed Out! production, learning their lines, developing their acting skills, and doing a fantastic job learning and performing the songs.

In History, Year 5 completed their learning about World War II. To celebrate the end of the unit, each class enjoyed a wonderful day at Manor Farm, where they took part in a rationing workshop, discovered how farm animals helped feed the nation during the war, made rag rugs, and experienced life in a 1940s classroom.

The children have also worked hard in their English groups this half term.

Mr Sherlock and Mrs Browne's groups have focused on improving their spelling and handwriting and fine-tuning their transcription skills. Meanwhile, Miss Lawrence's group have explored higher-level writing techniques as they worked towards writing a Blitz narrative.

To round off the term, the children completed their final art projects, producing some fantastic propaganda posters featuring drawings of Winston Churchill. They used watercolours to create a colour wash background before adding bold lettering and bringing their Churchill portraits to life.

The Year 5 team would like to wish all the children and their families a wonderful Summer holiday and look forward to seeing all that they achieve in Year 6!

YEAR 6 FINAL FEW DAYS AT BOSMERE

It’s here at last: Year 6’s final few days at Bosmere Junior School!

Our pupils have been looking back at their Autumn writing and using the skills they developed this year to refine and elevate their work.

In maths, Year 6 explored enterprise in creative ways. All three classes paired up to design and run their own theme parks. Working to a set budget and real-world running costs, each pair planned, named, and costed their park—an engaging challenge they thoroughly enjoyed.

Alongside this, each class formed small businesses with a £10 start-up fund. Teams researched, purchased stock, and sold to peers and the wider school. They have repaid their start-up costs and also raised money for the PTA and a charity—an inspiring, hands-on introduction to entrepreneurship and financial responsibility.  Congratulations Year 6 - you raised £260.43 for charity (still to be decided on) and presented the PTA with a total of £543.82.

Our Year 6 pupils are embracing every moment of their final Bosmere experiences. There’s still lots to look forward to. Autograph books, our Tenpin treat and the Leavers’ Disco.

The Year 6 team would like to thank all the children's parents for their support this year.  We are incredibly proud of this cohort and wish them every success as they begin the next stage of their education at secondary school.

NEWSLETTER FROM SCHOOL AGE IMMUNISATION SERVICE

Flu Vaccine

The NHS School Age Immunisation Service are planning the roll out of the 2026 winter flu vaccination programme to all year groups. The service offers the flu vaccine in school between September and December. You will receive an email, with details on how to complete the online form, for your child to receive the vaccine in school.

Flu can be a very unpleasant illness for children and young people. High vaccine uptake reduces the risk of flu spreading rapidly in school settings. This helps ensure they remain well, do not miss school days and continue to learn. Vaccinating children also helps protect others who are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from flu, such as babies, anyone who’s pregnant and older people.

The vaccine is given as a painless nasal spray. An alternative porcine free injection is offered to those who cannot have the nasal spray.

ECO NEWS

It has been another busy and exciting half term for sustainability across the school, with pupils showing great enthusiasm for learning about and caring for our environment.

Our sustainability curriculum has continued to grow, with new lessons being taught across Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. Pupils have explored important environmental themes, developed their understanding of climate change, and discussed ways they can make a positive difference both at school and at home.

One of the highlights of the half term was the celebration of our incredibly successful Walk to School Week. Children and families embraced the challenge with great determination, helping to reduce traffic and lower carbon emissions. A special congratulations goes to 5L and 4JH, who achieved the biggest reductions to their carbon footprints and demonstrated a fantastic commitment to more sustainable travel.

We were also delighted to showcase the wonderful Big Bosmere Bird Watch poems. The beautiful display celebrated both pupils’ creativity and their appreciation of local wildlife. The poems demonstrated thoughtful observations of nature and reminded us all of the importance of protecting habitats for birds and other wildlife.

{item_alt_tag}

Many children enthusiastically took part in 30 Days Wild, spending time outdoors and engaging in activities that helped them connect with the natural world. From observing wildlife and identifying plants to learning more about local ecosystems, pupils embraced every opportunity to deepen their understanding of the environment.

During the recent mammoth heat wave, children also completed additional home learning focused on climate change. It was encouraging to see pupils making links between what they have learned in school and real-world events, reflecting on how changing weather patterns can impact both people and the environment.

Finally, we would like to extend a huge thank you to our 2025–26 Eco Councillors. They have done a fabulous job throughout the year, leading initiatives, encouraging others to make environmentally responsible choices, and helping to make sustainability a key part of school life. Their enthusiasm, commitment and leadership have inspired pupils across the school. Miss Lawrence can't wait to meet next year's Eco Councillors and continue to make our school a more sustainable place to be!

Well done to everyone who has contributed to making this such a successful half term for sustainability. We look forward to building on these achievements and continuing our journey towards a greener future.

READING CHALLENGE

Join the Read to the Beat Summer Reading Challenge!

This summer, why not make reading part of your family's holiday adventure? We are encouraging all children to take part in the ‘Read to the Beat’ Summer Reading Challenge during the six-week summer break.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun and exciting way to keep children reading throughout the holidays, helping them maintain and develop their reading skills while discovering new books, authors and stories. This year's musical theme, Read to the Beat, celebrates the joy of reading through rhythm, creativity and imagination.

Children can join the challenge free of charge at any Hampshire Library. Participants can borrow books, track their reading progress and collect rewards along the way. Whether your child enjoys adventure stories, mysteries, graphic novels, non-fiction or picture books, library staff will be delighted to help them find something they love.

Taking part in the challenge can:

  • Build confidence and enjoyment in reading
  • Encourage children to explore new genres and authors
  • Support learning and literacy skills over the summer holidays
  • Provide a fun, achievable goal during the break

Libraries are welcoming, family-friendly spaces and offer a fantastic range of books and activities throughout the summer. If you're planning days out during the holidays, be sure to add a visit to your local Hampshire Library to your list.

Sign up for the Read to the Beat Summer Reading Challenge at any Hampshire Library and help your child keep the reading rhythm going all summer long.

For more information, visit your local Hampshire Library or check the Hampshire Libraries website.

Children who share their certificate with us in September, will receive a Headteacher Award... a great way to start the new school year!

Where’s Wally? Competition

To finish off the term, we centred a treasure hunt around the ever popular character of Wally: 9 Wallies were hidden around the school, each accompanied by a letter. Having spotted them all and unscrambled the letters, the children identified the name of the famous author, Roald Dahl. All the children who took part and correctly worked out the answer received sweets, with the winning team of Molly M and Lily W, both in 5BD, adding detailed descriptions of exactly where each Wally had been found. It was all great fun, if a little bit chaotic!

Wishing everyone a very happy summer break and remember to escape into a few books …

E-SAFETY TIPS

Are you considering buying a Smart Phone for your child in 'readiness' for Secondary School?

The UK Government has announced plans to ban children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook. The move is part of a wider effort to improve online safety and reduce the risks young people face when using these services.

The new rules are expected to come into force from Spring 2027 and will include stronger age checks, as well as limits on features such as live streaming and contact with strangers.

Why the Government Is Taking Action

This announcement comes after growing concern about the impact of social media on children’s wellbeing. Issues such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and excessive screen time have all been highlighted as risks.

The Government has said the aim is to “give kids their childhood back” and to make sure technology companies do more to protect young users.

While there is still discussion about how the ban will be enforced, the direction is clear: there will be stronger limits on social media use for younger children.

Links to Secondary School Expectations

For families with children about to move up to secondary school, this announcement fits closely with current school guidance.

Many secondary schools already expect pupils to be smartphone-free during the school day, or to have very limited access to their devices. The government’s plans support this approach by reinforcing the message that young people do not need regular access to social media at this age.

This consistency between schools and national policy helps create a clearer, shared expectation for children.

Making Things Easier for Parents

Parents often feel under pressure to give their child a smartphone when they start secondary school. For some, it can feel like “everyone else has one.”

However, these new government plans make it much easier for parents to hold the line. They provide a strong reason to say:

  • social media access is being restricted nationally
  • schools are already limiting phone use
  • it is reasonable to delay giving a smartphone

In effect, the policy helps to “reset the norm”, making it easier for families to say that children simply do not need a smartphone.

Although the details will continue to develop, the overall message is becoming clearer. There is a growing shift towards protecting children from the negative effects of social media and encouraging healthier habits at a younger age.

WELLBEING TIP

BOSMERE PARENT TEACHING ASSOCIATION (PTA)

As another school year comes to an end, the PTA would like to thank the whole school community for supporting our various fundraising events in 2025-2026.

Fundraising highlights in 2026:

Spring discos raised £965

Giant Easter egg raffle raised £416

Film nights raised £755

Our flagship event of the year Superstars raised a massive £2,332!

As you can see, it’s been another successful year for fundraising and even with the big purchase of the minibus in February, we are almost in touching distance of our next target: the funds to buy a complete new suite of 30 laptops for the ICT suite. We hope to have enough money by early 2027 for those (after our Autumn and Christmas events).

In the meantime, the PTA also continues to fund some smaller items: Sports Day refreshments, the Year 6 leavers' party, and three new keyboards for school computers.

It’s not only Year 6 pupils leaving the school but also Year 6 parents on the PTA. We have been very lucky to have Jacqui Green as our treasurer for a number of years but as her youngest child leaves the school, we sadly say goodbye to Jacqui too: we’re so grateful for the time and effort Jacqui has dedicated to this role.

Anyone interested in attending PTA meetings or volunteering to help is always warmly invited. Equally if you have any feedback for the PTA or ideas on which to spend the money raised, please get in touch. We look forward to welcoming the children at our next events in the Autumn.

INFORMATION FROM HAMPSHIRE NURSING TEAM

COULD YOUR CHILD’S iPHONE BE A SIMPLER PHONE?

This video explains how Apple’s Assistive Access feature can turn an iPhone into a much simpler device. By limiting the phone to essential apps such as calls, messages and the camera, parents can reduce distractions and create a more focused, child-friendly experience.

Unlike a traditional “dumb phone”, an iPhone using Assistive Access can still provide important safety features, including location sharing and tracking, helping parents stay connected and know where their child is when needed.

For families who want to reduce access to social media and other distractions without giving up the benefits of a smartphone, Assistive Access offers a practical middle ground between a fully featured smartphone and a basic mobile phone.
