Spring 2 2025

MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON

As we draw to the end of our Spring Term, I believe Spring may have finally arrived! The snowdrops by the copse appeared and disappeared and now the daffodils are popping up all over the place! What a busy Spring term this has been. We seem to have squeezed so much into it, from Book Week with a great author visit, to Project Based Learning and exhibitions for parents, to exciting trips and visitors – read on to find out more! As ever, I am exceptionally proud of all the wonderful learning which has been taking place and the huge range of talents shown by all of our children here at Bosmere. I do hope everyone can enjoy a well-deserved break over the Easter holidays.

STAFFING NEWS

It’s been another calm half term with no members of staff leaving and nobody new starting!

We are, however, saying our official ‘goodbye’ to our lovely Mrs Smith, who has devoted so many years to Bosmere. I know she has taught many of our parents whose children have also joined this school! As well as being a very popular teacher, Mrs Smith has always been very passionate about music and has always taken a lead role with our school choir. She was instrumental in organising events where our choir could show off their singing talents within the community and we were regularly asked to sing at Waitrose, The Meridian Centre, and at local old people’s homes. Our school choir also took part in many ensembles at other schools and were always given such high accolades when performing at singing concerts. We have so much to thank her for and we will all miss her when she leaves.

We are hoping to arrange a time at the end of the Summer Term, when Mrs Smith feels well enough, for her to come back into school to say a proper “Farewell” to everyone.

RED NOSE DAY

Thank you to all the children who came to school in non school uniform with crazy hair for Red Nose Day. We raised £243.50 for charity.

2KG EASTER EGG

Thank you to everyone who bought tickets for the Easter Egg donated to the school by Havant Rotary. The lucky winner was Jude Keogh, ticket number 385. I’m sure the chocolate egg will last for ages!!!!! We raised a massive £417 for the PTA.

FILM NIGHT

The film nights were very well supported and I received great feedback about the film the children watched. Once again, money raised from this event will go to the PTA to go towards the purchase of a new mini bus. We are hoping to have raised enough money to purchase this at some point next year.

YEAR 3 NEWS

Year 3 have been looking at dissolving in science this term. They even managed to convince the teachers that the skittle experiment was a real thing!

In English the children have been looking at the story of the Scarab Beetle and have also been writing about the Egyptian Gods that they have learned about in History. Kev Payne, a famous author, made a visit to the school and ran a fantastic workshop in each year group. He also signed lots of copies of books that the children had purchased.

The children have been comparing millimetres, centimetres and metres in Maths. They have also been deciding which unit of measure would be used to measure different things.

All Year 3 children are looking forward to visiting Dell Quay next term using their geography knowledge to explore the river.

YEAR 4 NEWS

Year 4 have had a fantastic time recently, continuing to dive into the world of Greek myths. The children have enjoyed exploring these timeless tales, using their imaginations to bring the stories to life - we loved reading their instructions on how to defeat The Hydra and Medusa!

A particular highlight of our topic on Ancient Greece was the opportunity for the children to share their Project Based Learning (PBL) work with parents. The sense of pride was clear to see as they confidently showcased their projects and explained their learning journeys. It was wonderful to witness their hard work and dedication being celebrated; thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Another memorable experience was our recent visit to St Faith's Church for the Easter Experience. Year 4 were engaged and reflective as they explored the Easter story in a meaningful and interactive way. A huge thank you to the volunteers at St Faith's for providing such a special opportunity.

As we head into the Easter break, it has been wonderful to see the continued enthusiasm Year 4 have shown in their learning and we have no doubt this will continue into the summer term.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a happy and restful Easter holiday.

YEAR 5 NEWS

Swimming Lessons: Congratulations to class 5L for successfully completing their swimming lessons! The children have shown great progress and confidence in the water. Class 5P will begin their swimming lessons after Easter, and we look forward to seeing their development.

D-Day Museum Visit: Our Year 5 pupils recently visited the D-Day Museum, and we are proud to report that they were brilliant throughout the trip. The children engaged enthusiastically with the exhibits and demonstrated excellent behaviour and curiosity. They learned about the significant events of D-Day, explored various artefacts, and participated in interactive displays that brought history to life. The museum staff commended our pupils for their insightful questions and respectful conduct.

Literacy: We have been working on the book 'Holes' by Louis Sachar, and the children have been incredibly enthusiastic about the story. Their discussions and insights have been impressive, and we are thrilled to see their passion for reading and learning.

YEAR 6 NEWS

As usual Year 6 have been incredibly busy. The highlight so far has been our visit to the STEM fair at Chichester College. When we arrived, the children had the opportunity to visit lots of different stands. These featured different activities ranging from a racing simulator, making keyrings from recycled plastic to maggot racing. The children even got their fingerprints taken for a key ring. Hopefully, this visit will encourage more young people to go into a STEM career.

Year 6 looked impressive when they dressed up for Book Week. They all enjoyed listening to a story they chose and the activities that went with it.

We are currently in the Isle of Wight on our residential visit. We will have lots to report back in the next newsletter

GOVERNOR NEWS

We are currently in the process of appointing a new Parent Governor so will keep you all up to date when this process is completed.

PARENT CONSULTATIONS

It was lovely to see so many parents at our parent consultation meetings this half term. If you did not get the opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher, please either contact them directly via email or contact the school office and we will be happy to set up a meeting for you.

BOOK WEEK

Bosmere had a great time celebrating Book Week. The visiting author Kev Payne kept everyone entertained on the Monday with a really fun assembly to kick the celebrations off. He then ran workshops with each year group throughout the day. The children who bought his books were very excited about him signing them. The children (and staff) all excelled with their costumes this year so a big thank you to parents for making this possible. We had lots of competitions running and the school council picked the winners for the loo roll decorating competition and the extreme reading competition. It was very funny seeing the pictures of pets reading books in unusual places. The children loved the opportunity for parents to come into school to book share, so thank you to all those who made it into school. Luckily during story time and snuggles we didn’t have any lower school children falling asleep!!

SATS

Year 6 children will be sitting their SATs tests next half term starting on 12th May. They have worked so hard this year and are more than ready to show everyone what they can do. They deserve to be very proud of all they have achieved. We do not want any children getting anxious about these tests. As parents, you can help them by making sure they get plenty of sleep and arrive on time to school each day, having had a good breakfast.

SUPERSTARS

We are looking forward to holding our annual ‘Superstars’ PTA fundraising event on Wednesday 21st May during the afternoon and continuing after school. Parents are invited to join us in the playground to watch their children taking part in some crazy events! There will be refreshments available and lots of fun to be had. More details will be coming out about this next half term, including a plea for parent support on our refreshment stalls. Look out for further ParentMail information regarding this event.

FAIRFIELD EASTER TRAIL

The Fairfield PTA are running an Easter Trail around Havant over the Easter holidays. It involves following clues to find letters in shop windows. Trail sheets can then be returned to AJs Diner in market parade for an Easter treat.

Fairfield will be selling the trail sheets next week at pick up and drop off, but they will also be available to buy from AJs from Saturday 5th April.

E-Safety Tip for Parents: Understanding the Risks of TikTok

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms amongst children, allowing users to create and share short videos. While it can be a fun and creative outlet, it also comes with risks that parents should be aware of.

Did You Know? TikTok has an age restriction of 13 years old according to its terms of service. However, it’s easy for children to sign up with a false date of birth, meaning many younger users are accessing the platform without appropriate safeguards.

The Risks

· Inappropriate Content: Although TikTok has content moderation, unsuitable videos can still appear.

· Contact with Strangers: The platform allows users to comment and send direct messages, posing a risk of unwanted contact.

· Peer Pressure and Trends: Some viral challenges can be unsafe, encouraging risky behaviour.

· Privacy Concerns: Children may unintentionally share personal information in their videos.

TikTok, while popular amongst children, has been linked to several real-life incidents that highlight significant safety concerns. Here are some notable cases:

1. Dangerous Challenges Leading to Harm

· "Blackout Challenge": This challenge encourages individuals to asphyxiate themselves until they lose consciousness. Tragically, it has been associated with multiple fatalities amongst young users. For instance, in April 2022, 14-year-old Jools from the UK died after attempting this challenge.

2. Exposure to Harmful Content

· Suicide-Related Videos: Families have reported that TikTok's algorithm exposed their children to content promoting self-harm and suicide. In France, several families are suing TikTok, alleging that the platform's harmful content contributed to their children's suicides.

3. Cyberbullying and Harassment

· Public Shaming Accounts: In Sydney, over 200 TikTok accounts were shut down after they were found to be publicly shaming female students from local schools. These accounts posted derogatory content, leading to increased concerns about cyberbullying on the platform.

4. Inappropriate Contact

· Online Predation: In a concerning case, a 31-year-old man was charged with coercing a 9-year-old girl into sharing explicit images after initiating contact on TikTok and continuing communication on Roblox. This highlights the risk of predators using social media platforms to exploit minors.

These incidents underscore the importance of parental vigilance and open communication with children about their online activities. Ensuring that privacy settings are appropriately configured, discussing the dangers of online challenges, and fostering an environment where children feel comfortable reporting concerning content or interactions can help mitigate these risks.

How You Can Help

Here are some practical steps to keep your child safe on TikTok:

· Check the Age: Ensure your child is at least 13 years old before using the app

· Set Up Privacy Settings: Enable a private account so only approved followers can see their videos.

· Enable Family Pairing: TikTok offers a Family Pairing feature that allows parents to manage screen time, restrict content, and monitor messaging.

· Talk About Online Behaviour: Have regular conversations about what’s appropriate to share and how to handle uncomfortable situations.

· Monitor Activity: Consider co-viewing content and asking your child to show you their favourite creators and trends.

By staying informed and involved, you can help your child navigate TikTok safely.

WELLBEING TIP

The end of term is nearly upon us and the dreaded sound of “I’m bored” could be starting to ring in your ears. Get off those devices and explore the outside. Fun days out are what you make them and there are plenty of days out that are free and close by that offer free Easter activities for children and adults alike.

Raining? Cold? Windy? No problem… there is no such thing as “bad weather” it’s more to do with “wrong clothing.” Dress for the weather, extra layers if it’s raining and a spare pair of shoes/boots for the mud.

No child will remember a particular time they played well on their games console or sat in front of the TV, but they will remember the day they ran in the mud, did an Easter egg hunt in the woods, got soaked by a wave or made a den. You never know, you may actually enjoy it! Take a look at https://thingstodoinhampshirewithkids.co.uk Family Information and Services Hub

FARM VISITS AND TICK AWARENESS

HCC have asked us to issue the following advice to families:-

Now is the time of year when farms open their gates to share with the public the joy of spring and the arrival of new life. Over the Easter Holidays families may take the opportunity to spend time visiting farms and other animal attractions. While the experience is fun and educational there is also a risk that infections commonly carried by animals are passed on to people.

Another aspect to consider for outdoor activities is ticks, which are most active between spring and autumn and which can sometimes transmit diseases such as Lyme disease.

More details can be found via these links. How to stay safe from infections carried by animals when visiting a farm – UK Health Security Agency Tick Awareness Leaflet, or visit the NHS website for more information on signs, symptoms and treatments for Lyme disease.
