Autumn 1 2024

MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON

Welcome everyone to the first of our Bosmere Newsletters for this new school year. I cannot quite believe we are approaching the end of the first half term already. As is always the case, we have had such a busy start to the year in the first half of the Autumn Term, but it has been wonderful to see all of the children settle into the routines of their new classes and to focus on their learning with such drive and enthusiasm.  We seem to have crammed so much into the last few weeks! As always, I have been absolutely amazed by the work the children are producing and by the way they speak so confidently about their learning.

STAFFING NEWS

We have had a few changes in class teachers since the start of the year, with some teachers changing year groups in order to maintain consistency due to the absence of other staff:

  • Mrs Dawson, who was covering in Mrs Barnard’s class this half term will now be continuing with this class for the rest of the year, sharing the class with Mrs Reed. This class will now be called 3DR.
  • Mrs Barnard will now be teaching the class previously shared by Mrs Reed and Mrs Smith in Year 6. This class will now be called 6B.
  • Mrs Smith continues to be very poorly and will certainly not be able to return to school this term. We send her all of our best wishes for a speedy recovery so that she can re-join us later in the year.

We also have a vacancy for an additional LSA at the moment. The closing date for this position is 4th November.

NEW PE DAYS

As a result of these staffing changes, we have also had to do a bit of a swap around with timetables, which means that there will be new PE days for some year groups starting straight after half term:

Year 3 – Wednesday / Thursday

Year 4 – Wednesday / Thursday

Year 5 – Tuesday / Friday

Year 6 – Monday / Tuesday

MACMILLAN CAKE SALE

Thank you so much to all the parents who supported our Macmillan Cake Sale by sending in cakes (there really were some delicious ones!). The children thoroughly enjoyed being able to buy (and eat!) the cakes on the day and we managed to raise a wonderful £506.46 for Macmillan. Well done everyone!

PRE LOVED WINTER UNIFORM SALE

Our Pre-Loved Uniform Event was also a huge success, not only doing our bit for the environment by recycling clothes but also raising £146.15 for the PTA through donations. Thank you so much to the parents and staff who gave up their time to help on the day, and also to our Eco Club members who helped to sort the clothes.

SCARF WORKSHOPS

At the start of October, all the children participated in PSHE sessions run by Caroline from Coram Life Education inside the ‘inflatable classroom’! These sessions compliment the learning taking place across the school in PSHE lessons, introducing new topics and re-enforcing previous learning.

It was wonderful to see how interested and enthusiastic the children were. We were delighted to see them participating responsibly in discussions, engaging in the range of activities on offer and putting their teamwork skills to good use! There was a real sense of wonder across the sessions, and we hope your children came home and shared some of their experiences. This year we introduced some new sessions to the children, with a focus on Mental Health.

A big thank you to Caroline for delivering another set of fantastic sessions, and to Harold The Giraffe... who was undoubtedly the star of the show in every class!  And thank you to the PTA for once again funding these exciting sessions for the children.

YEAR 3 NEWS

Year 3 have done some brilliant writing already this term. Their teachers have enjoyed reading their descriptive writing using similes about a Grouchosaurus. Maths has also been fun! We even made 2D shape collages and 3D shapes out of spaghetti and marshmallows. We are learning all about skeletons in science. In art, we are studying the famous artist Paul Klee, and we created our own portraits in the style of his art. The children enjoyed their visit to St Faith's Church and impressed Cannon Tom with their wonder and curiosity. He also impressed them with his organ playing. We definitely enjoyed the Macmillan cake sale and there were lots of sticky faces (not just the children's).

We are now looking forward to our healthy DT project, the Christmas experience, and the Carol service.

Well done, Year 3, you have impressed us with your resilience and how quickly you have settled into life at Bosmere.

YEAR 4 NEWS

Year 4 have had a brilliant start to the new academic year.  After a jam-packed few weeks, it's hard to believe they've only been in this year group since September!

We are incredibly proud of all of the children for the positive attitudes and maturity they have shown towards their learning.  For all of the children, a new year group is a fresh start, and it has been wonderful to see them embracing this opportunity.

Our history topic on the Romans is proving hugely popular with the children.  They have also been enjoying learning about light in science and have been lucky enough to have RE lessons with Cannon Tom. In English we have finished our settings unit, moving away from the Caribbean and going back in time to the life of soldiers Ancient Rome.  By the end of this half term the children will have written a letter in role, and will be looking at persuasive writing after the break.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the train to Fishbourne.  The children were brilliantly behaved and were a credit to the school.  It was wonderful to see the children engaging with the activities on offer, working together and making the most of the opportunities on offer.  The trip brought our topic on the Romans to life and we hope your child shared their experiences from the day with you.  We have now also had our trips to Fort Nelson.  This was a fantastic trip which the children really loved.

Thank you to those parents who attended our parent drop in after school, 4AW's class assembly and our Drop, Stop and Calculate sessions.  It was lovely to meet you all and we hope you found our times tables session useful.  Please continue to work on times tables at home, we do as much as we can in school, but the key to success is practise, practise, practise!

Although it is only October, preparations are beginning for our Year 4 Nativity.  Please keep an eye out for information over the coming weeks and support your child with learning their lines and practising their songs.

A gentle reminder that children should be reading regularly at home with an adult.  Please ensure reading diaries are signed weekly and brought into school on a Monday.  There are still a significant number of children who are not doing this regularly and we would appreciate your support with this.

Wishing you all a lovely half term break,

The Year 4 Team

YEAR 5 NEWS

The children in Year 5 have settled so well into the year group and are getting to grips with the expectations and routines. We are currently working on our wonderful text driver ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and the children are showing great enthusiasm and interest. To support our PSHE learning, we have recently had a great opportunity to take part in C.A.R.E workshops to introduce the children to strategies they may find useful to deal with tricky situations and big feelings. 5B have started their swimming sessions and will be continuing for the rest of the term. 5L will begin after Christmas and 5P will take part in the summer term. We have now also begun our new Science unit - Space. We are really looking forward to continuing to work together as we move through the year.

YEAR 6 NEWS

Our school year in Year 6 started off with a busy round of settling into our new classes and starting some tests.  All the children took these challenges in their stride.

We then had to vote for our house captains, vice-captains, school councillors and prefects.

Our Macmillan cake sale was as popular as ever, helping to raise money for this fantastic charity.

Year 6 then had 3 class visits to Dell Quay to learn about animal classification, habitats and adaptation.  The weather was only kind to Mr. Kershaw's class!

Then followed a visit from the Fire Safety unit to teach us about what to do in a fire emergency.   We also enjoyed our SCARF workshops.  Most of year 6 also took part in the Bikeability lessons.

This week, we are looking forward to welcoming parents in to take part in our Drop, Stop and SATs afternoon.  The children are excited to see how well their families fair with the examples of tests they have to take on at the end of the year.  Good luck parents!

MEET THE GOVERNORS – Gem Terry

Background:

I am from Havant and continue to live in Havant. I went to school at Warren Park First and Middle school and then on to Park Community. I have experienced a variety of jobs, and am qualified as a legal secretary and GP practice administrator. I had a break to raise my 2 lovely daughters and found my chosen career in schools when my youngest daughter started school in 2016.

Why I became a governor:

I am a current member of staff at Bosmere. I love working with the children and supporting them with their learning. I became a governor to learn more about how the school is run and what I can do to support their vision to enable lifelong learners.

My current role as a governor.

I have been selected to be the governor subject lead for Spanish. As well as the governor for our Eco School team. I am also on the Curriculum and Achievement Committee.

ECO NEWS

It has been a very busy start to the year for Eco Club! We have gone to explore the copse, our vegetable beds and orchards and searched throughout the school for anything eco! We have spent some time making informative posters about topics such as recycling, conserving water and endangered species, and have enjoyed using the water bottles we collected to make rain gauges!

WELLBEING TIP

Half term is nearly upon us and it’s the dreaded sound of “I’m bored.” Get off those devices and explore the outside. Fun days out are what you make them and there are plenty of days out that are free and close by!

There are plenty of places that offer a spooky treat or pumpkin picking with Halloween nearly upon us or for those who like a demurer activity, try a country park or local woods.

Raining? Cold? Windy? No problem… there is no such thing as “bad weather” it’s more to do with “wrong clothing.” Wrap up for the warm, extra layers if it’s raining and a spare pair of shoes/boots for the mud.

No child will remember a particular time they played well on their games console, but they will remember the day they ran in the mud, got soaked by a wave, made a den and all of that is with you!
