Religious Education is taught as a separate subject in accordance with the Agreed Hampshire Syllabus “Living Difference III.”

Living Difference III is the Agreed Syllabus for religious education (RE) in Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight. It builds on an approach to religious education, enriched by philosophical and theological enquiry, as well as current research, used in Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton since 2004. Living Difference III is evidence of the ongoing, fruitful partnership between Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton, and now the Isle of Wight, in relation to religious education.

Collective Worship

At Bosmere we follow the requirements of the 1988 Education Reform Act which states that:

“all pupils in attendance at a maintained school shall on each school day take part in an act of collective worship”. They must also be “appropriate, having regard to the ages, aptitudes and family backgrounds of the pupils”.

More details are provided in our Collective Worship Policy (see below).

Right to Withdrawal

Our school is based on an inclusive ethos; we expect all children to attend collective Worship assemblies. However we respect the right of any parent/guardian to request permission for their child to be excused. This complies with the 1944 Education Act and was restated in the 1988 Education reform Act. Withdrawal will only be made following parental discussion with the Head teacher followed by written confirmation of withdrawal. The school will make alternative arrangements for the supervision of those children granted withdrawal from assemblies. This complies with the 1944 Education Act and was restated in the 1988 Education reform Act. The Head Teacher keeps a record of all those children withdrawn from Collective Worship.
