Eco-school News October 2022

The Whale Watchers Competition

On 3rd October we invited pupils to enter an exciting competition to design a unique and eye-catching Brita recycling bin that will inspire people to reduce, reuse and recycle to protect the environment. BRITA is working with Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) to help tackle single-use plastic pollution which has devastating effects on marine life including huge animals like whales and dolphins. The winning entry will be awarded £3,000 to spend on a sustainability initiative of our choice.  More details in the poster below. Some of our Eco Club members started creating their designs in our meeting on 4th October - click here for some more photos.

Walktober

Bosmere took part in Walktober which we promoted by Parentmail (see below).

Pre-Loved Winter Clothing and Uniform Event

With our Eco Schools status, the idea of recycling clothing fits in perfectly with Bosmere’s already extensive mission of saving energy and waste. Because of this, we held a Pre-Loved Winter Clothing and Uniform Event in school on Tuesday 4th October.  We promoted this by Parentmail (see below). Our Eco Councillors helped on the day - click here for more photos.

Environmental Review

On 4th October, we completed our Environmental Review, working in small mixed groups of pupils in our Eco Club meeting. See below for the completed Environmental Review and a summary of the positive responses.

Recycled Pen Pots

We are aiming to have a pot in every classroom to collect pens to be recycled. Some classes already have one, in a suitably recycled container! Click here for photos.

Planting spring bulbs in the Jubilee Orchard

On 11th October, Eco Club ate their lunch outside in the sunshine while Mrs Wright explained the plan for planting 155 crocus bulbs and 25 daffodil bulbs in our Jubilee Orchard. The children planted the crocus bulbs in the shape of an 'E' (for Elizabeth) marked out with string in the middle of the orchard, and 5 daffodil bulbs around each of the 5 apple trees. Click here for more photos.

Action Plan

Having completed our Environmental Review, we decided to focus on 5 topic areas:

Biodiversity, Energy, Marine, Transport, and Water

On 18th October, we started to work on our Action Plan in mixed year groups. Click here to see our ideas.

Havant Jubilee Tree Sculpture

In March 2022, Storm Eunice brought down a huge tree in central Havant.

Havant Borough Council decided the fallen tree should be carved into a sculpture to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and invited Bosmere pupils to submit designs to be used by a chain saw sculptor.

In October 2022, Kate Pontin of HBC visited Bosmere to tell us about the project and to announce the winners of the design competition.
